Shampooing Tips

Shampooing your hair correctly is very important when you wear natural hair.  Some people think that because your hair is natural you don't shampoo at all.  This couldn't be further from the truth.  In fact, you can shampoo and keep your hair cleaner than when wearing straight styles.

One important thing to know about shampooing your natural hair is to NEVER sleep on wet or damp hair.  Shampoo your hair early enough to allow it to either air dry, use a blow dryer or sit under a hood dr

More on Fresh Hair

I designed Fresh Hair products to freshen the scent of the hair and scalp between shampoos.  Lavender and Peppermint are single essential oil formulas.  This is because lavender and peppermint both have very healing properties and when you wear natural hair it is not necessary to add a lot of heavy, oil-based products to your hair that could cause build-up.

My Dry Scalp & Dandruff formula is a multiple essential oil blend designed to address the needs of a dry, itchy scalp accompan

Walking in the Rain

It is amazing how free I feel with my natural hair.  Yesterday, I was walking to my car in the pouring ran and didn't even have an umbrella.  I went to the bank with my son and as I was getting out of the car he asked if I wanted the umbrella.  I looked at him and just said, "No thanks, I have Sisterlocks!"  With that I made my way into the bank.

What are your thoughts on rain, swim and water all of which are former 4-letter words?

Celebrating Natural Hair & Black History Month

I love Black History Month.  It's a time to reflect and learn from our history.  The Afro; while it may have seemed just a "hairstyle" to many, in the 1960's when a few high profile African American's like James Brown & Jimi Hendrix, wore the style it was a statement.  That statement was the beginning of Black folks expressing the pride they had in themselves and their race.  Even though it would take years for the Afro to be widely accepted by the 1970's many of us were wearing the 'Fro

This Has Nothing To Do With Hair - This Is About OUR PRESIDENT!

Subject: Read what a white professor wrote in a Georgia Newspaper...

Andrew M. Manis is associate professor of history at Macon State College in Georgia and wrote this for an editorial in the Macon Telegraph.

Andrew M. Manis: When Are WE Going to Get Over It?

For much of the last forty years, ever since America "fixed" its race problem in the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we white people have been impatient with African Americans who continued to blame race for their difficulties.… Continue

It's HOT! Are you wearing an up-do?

I know it had to be almost 100 degrees yesterday. I walked outside and turned right back around - I just couldn't handle it!

Many of us have prayed for our hair to grow for years - OK, I'm the only one. Now that it's long and HOT, I'm playing around with up-do's like the one posted in the featured photos. Are you wearing an up-do to handle the heat? Please post a picture of your favorite up-do and if you don't have one, get creative and see what you come up with.

Please share!

thanks
